just a few thoughts

finally i am little free right now. papers of 3 heavy courses in last 36 hours has been a terrible experience. luckily there is no exam tomorrow and so for a change, i can take good amount of sleep tonight. anyways as i sit in front of the computer, i am contemplating about some of the happenings in this semester.

1. my coffee intake has increased heavily this semester. till last semester i remember having a coffee at CCD only at nights when i were feeling sleepy but had to work for some projects etc. but this semester, i am having on an average 3 coffee glasses (and they are really big glasses) each day. and having a glass or two at night hours is becoming a habit irrespective of whether i have to continue working at night. i know coffee addiction is bad, may be i should do something about this.

2. i remember being extremely fussy about some of my personal belonings in bangalore. some of my friends didn't like when i used to repeatedly ask them to take good care of the CDs that they have taken from me etc. i also thought that may be i should take things little lightly and now i repent doing the same. a friend here took a couple of CDs around 4 months back, hasn't cared to return them and whenever asked for the same, gives some reason to end the talk. i am quite sure that he has lost it. another guy took a CD and has lost it (at least he cared to tell this). so now i think that may be some habits should not change otherwise it is you only who suffer the most.

3. some days back, there was a cricket match at eden gardens here. since India was also playing many people from the college went to the stadium. almost all of them returned with sad faces because India lost badly that day. but the sad part was the way others who didn't go were making fun of them. the kind of behavior appeared pathetic to me because at least others went there to cheer for their team and their nation rather than the bunch of those who kept sitting in their rooms and did nothing but discussing how iim-c is better than iim-b or iim-a.

4. a friend of mine taught a very good funda of being happy. the mantra is remembering the old hindi proverb "naiki kar, dariya main daal". earlier i used to think a lot about how people take undue advantage of you, but have now realized that one has to do the things in best manner for one's own satisfaction. so he should be happy with the effort that he has put without worrying if others are freeriding on him or not. hopefully the "dariya" willn't get flooded one day.

5. i have always believed in the funda of "everything happens for some good". so when i didn't go on student exchange program this semester, i was sure that there is something good in that. as the semester is coming to a close, i can think of the following advantages:
(i) courses: i have taken some very good courses this semester. there is a course entirely devoted to "game theory" and its applications. it's really very interesting courses and makes you thing how vast is the scope of game theory. then there is a course on "econometrics" which covers very in-depth analysis of regression techniques, the most fundamental tool used for studying any economic data. the professor of this course is among the best profs i have met here and would surely rank him in the same league as prof. saibal chattopadhya who teaches statistics here. then there is the course on "quantitative applications in finance", another in-depth course on analysing financial time series data. overall, this is amongst the most practical courses that i have studied here and it was very insightful, not to mention, very tough too.
(ii) projects: i had projects in four courses this semester and two of them were individual projects. one of the individual project is still not over but the other three projects have turned out to be very good and i hope the same for the one that is remaining. i don't know how much marks i will get in the projects, but when one knows that he has given his best, why should he care any more for the results.
(iii) misc: in both the group projects, i got a chance to work with pushkar and sid (two of my good friends here) and learnt many things from them. they do things (calcutions, writing reports) very systematically and in an orderly fashion, which though i tend to do in my routing life, i sort of skip when it comes to doing projects. i feel that these things are equally important to follow in your professional life. so after working on the "quanti finance" project with them, i applied the same principles while doing the "econometric" project and feel that it has turned out better.

okay, so i think i will call it a day and go for my coffee break :)
